Texas History 10 – A new government

After defeating Santa Anna and the Mexican Army, the newly independent Texas had to create a new government. They chose Austin, Texas, as their capital, and the first Congress met there in November of 1839.

-But what is a congress? Let’s go read about the Congress of the United States to get an idea of how a congress works.

-Now let’s learn about the current House of Representatives – the people who are elected to represent us in decisions the government makes. First, read about the Texas House of Representatives. (This is a PDF, so you may have to zoom in on some of the details to ready.  Next, with your parent’s permission, search and find your current Representative.

-Now it’s time to fill in our timeline with section 7 from our Lone Star Junction Timeline.

-As you can see from the events on the timeline, even after Texas declared its independence, there was still a lot of fighting going on!  There were still Native Americans living in Texas who didn’t always get along with the Texans, and the Mexican Army continued to invade Texas.  Remember this for our next lesson – Joining forces.
