Today we’re exploring the early settlers of Texas – the people who came from other places to live and settle in Texas.
Supplies
- Paper
- Pencil
-Let’s begin by working on the next section of our timeline. On the next blank timeline page, fill out the boxes with the information from section 2 of the Lone Star Junction Timeline. Remember to write the dates at the top and to either fill with information about the events or draw a picture.
-Read about Stephen F. Austin and how he helped to settle Texas. Click on his name on the Lone Star Junction Timeline.
-Stephen F Austin had to convince his friends to move to Texas to settle the territory. For your writing assignment, write a letter to one of your friends telling them why they should move to Texas. Include details about why you love it and some of your favorite things about Texas.

-Pull out your printed North America Through Time booklet.
-Look at the difference in the maps between 1763 and 1819. A lot has changed in North America! The United States won independence from Great Britain in 1776, and Spain lost some northern territory to the newly formed U.S. Write these two events on the lines below the map.
-Now take a look at the map for 1821. What have you learned from your timeline today that tells you why the map on page 4 looks like it does? Who does Texas belong to on this map? Write your observations on the lines.
-Cut out the next page of Texas History Vocabulary Words (you should have a pretty big stack by now!) and play a matching game with them. Place them in the envelope when you’re done.
